Should I visit an Emergency Room or an Urgent Care Clinic?

This is one of the most difficult questions to answer. Some illnesses require the immediate medical benefits of a hospital emergency room. However, in many cases, an Urgent Care facility is a quicker and often more cost-efficient alternative. The lists below offer some guidance as to what sort of treatment each type of care facilitates:

Emergency Room

  • Chest pain with shortness of breath

  • Severe burns

  • Electrical shock

  • Complications from pregnancy

  • Altered mental states

  • Seizure

  • Poison ingestion

  • Digit or extremity amputation

  • Syncope or unconsciousness

Urgent Care

  • Injury or illness you would visit your primary care physician for treatment

  • Nonsevere abdominal pain

  • Laceration or cut repair (stitches)

  • Treatment of minor burns or skin irritations

  • Cerumen (earwax) impaction removal

  • Drug testing

  • School or work physicals

  • Wart or skin tag removal

Is it more expensive to visit an urgent care rather than the emergency room?

Typically, the answer to this question is no. More often than not, an Urgent Care is much less costly than a traditional hospital emergency room. Sometimes this can be a quarter to a third as expensive as the ER.

What is the normal wait time at Meadowbrook Urgent Care?

Wait times are very short. Unlike an emergency room, where wait times can be as long as three to four hours or even more, Meadowbrook Urgent Care will typically see a patient within 15 to 20 minutes of their check-in. Most of the time these waits are even shorter.

What Forms of Payment Do You Accept?

We work with most major insurance companies and accept most forms of payment including cash, checks and credit cards (American Express, Mastercard and Visa). Patients will be responsible for their insurance copay (which varies by plan).

When should I visit my primary care physician, rather than Urgent Care?

An urgent care is not set up to be a replacement for your traditional primary care physician. However, Meadowbrook Urgent Care is an excellent option for your medical needs during those times when you cannot get into your primary care physician in a timely manner. We’re also a good place to go at times when your primary care physician’s office is not open, such as after hours, weekends and holidays. We will work closely with your primary care physician on a treatment plan specifically tailored to your medical needs.

As a patient of Meadowbrook Urgent Care, what are my rights and responsibilities?

At Meadowbrook Urgent Care, we strive to provide the best patient care possible. Unlike emergency rooms, we take the time to sit and talk to you, answering every single question you may have. We want you to be able to trust in us to be there for you when unexpected and unfortunate health problems arise. As a patient of Meadowbrook Urgent Care, you have both rights and responsibilities that will assist us in providing you with quality health care.

What are the qualifications of the staff at Meadowbrook Urgent Care?

One of the greatest benefits of Meadowbrook Urgent Care (compared to our competition) is that our doctors are all board certified. Our doctors have many years of experience in treating urgent medical needs. Please visit the “Our Staff” page for complete bios and information about our physicians.

What are the hours of operation? Are you open on Holidays?

Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays, 8 a.m to 6 p.m. We are open 364 days a year, including weekends and holidays. We are closed this year Saturday, Aug. 17, because Woodward Avenue is impassable to normal traffic during the Woodward Dream Cruise.

Do I have to make an appointment before coming in?

No, we encourage walk-in visits. Also, you can do online registration with our web check-in.

Where are you located?

Meadowbrook Urgent Care is located between Lincoln Street and 14 Mile Road at 33722 Woodward Avenue, Birmingham, MI 48009.

What should I bring with me to my appointment?

Please bring your most current insurance card and driver’s license or ID card. If you check in with us using our web check-in tool, please bring in your completed medical history and patient financial agreement and HIPPA forms. Be sure to also bring a list of your current medications.

Patient Rights

  • No discrimination. No patient will be denied appropriate care on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, marital status or sexual preference.

  • Appropriate care. Every patient is entitled to receive adequate and appropriate care.

  • Informed decisions. Every patient has the right to make informed decisions and to receive information about his or her medical condition, proposed course of treatment, prospects for recovery and available choices for treatment.

  • Inspection of medical records. Every patient or former patient is entitled to inspect or receive for a reasonable fee a copy of his or her medical record upon request within a reasonable timeframe.

  • Confidentiality of records. Every patient or former patient is entitled to confidential treatment of his or her personal and medical records. A third party shall not be allowed access to a patient’s personal and medical records without the prior authorization of the patient, except as required because of a transfer to another health care facility or as required by law or third party payment contract.

  • Privacy. Every patient is entitled to privacy to the extent feasible in treatment and in caring for his or her personal needs.

  • Explanation of billing. Every patient is entitled to receive and explanation of his or her bill, regardless of the source of payment.

  • Refusal of treatment. Every patient is entitled to refuse treatment to the extent provided by law and to be informed of the consequences of that refusal. However, when a refusal of treatment prevents the physician from providing appropriate care according to ethical and professional standards, the physician may terminate the relationship with the patient.

  • Personal safety. Every patient is entitled to expect reasonable safety as to Meadowbrook Urgent Care’s practices and environment.

  • Transfer of care. No patient shall be transferred to another facility unless the patient has received a complete explanation of the need to transfer.

  • HIV testing. No patient shall be tested for HIV infection without the patient’s consent unless a health care professional or Meadowbrook Urgent Care employee sustains percutaneous, mucous membrane or open wound exposure to the patient’s blood or other bodily fluids. If such exposure has occurred, an HIV test may be performed on the patient without the patient’s consent.

  • HIV testing. No patient shall be tested for HIV infection without the patient’s consent unless a health care professional or Meadowbrook Urgent Care employee sustains percutaneous, mucous membrane or open wound exposure to the patient’s blood or other bodily fluids. If such exposure has occurred, an HIV test may be performed on the patient without the patient’s consent.

Patient Responsibilities

  • Medical history. Each patient is responsible for providing honest and complete information about his or her current condition, past medical conditions, treatment and recent diagnoses.

  • Lack of understanding. Each patient is responsible for making it known if he or she does not understand the description of his or her condition or the description of the course of treatment proposed for that condition.

  • Compliance. Each patient is responsible for following the treatment plan recommended by the physician.

  • Charges for treatment. Regardless of the patient’s type of insurance, the patient is responsible for paying for or ensuring payment for the medical treatment administered by Meadowbrook Urgent Care.

  • Insurance coverage. It is the responsibility of each patient with health care insurance to know the benefits and exclusions of his or her health insurance plan.

  • Updated demographics. It is the responsibility of each patient to notify Meadowbrook Urgent Care of any changes in address, phone number and insurance information in a timely manner.
